Hymn 482 Lord of all
hopefulness
The Word of God
|
|
Blessed be God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. |
|
People |
And blessed be his
kingdom, now and for ever. |
The Celebrant may say
Almighty God, to you all
hearts are open, all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may
perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn 440 Blessed Jesus at thy Word
O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your
people who
call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand
what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and
power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
1st Reading Isaiah 55:10-13
10 For as the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making
it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so
shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but
it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
12 For you
shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the
mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead
of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and
it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
Hymn 702 Lord, thou has search me and
dost know
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great
crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the
whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables,
saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on
the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground,
where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had
no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had
no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew
up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some
a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!”
“Hear then the
parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not
understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart;
this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this
is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a
person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or
persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away.
As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the
cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.
But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and
understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold,
in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
Sermon The Rev. John Stewart
The Nicene
Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was
buried.
On the third day he rose again
in
accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is
seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no
end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and
glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Minister and People
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Bishop,
when present, or the Priest, stands and says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all
goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in
eternal life. Amen.
Our
Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as
it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass
against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
In
union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where
the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and
thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection;
I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament
of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart.
Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated
from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to
come. Amen.
Eternal
God, heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
