Monday Morning Prayer (June 15)
Daily Morning Prayer
The Feast of Evelyn Underhill
Evelyn Underhill was born in 1875 and grew
up in London. She embarked on a life of reading, writing, meditation, and
prayer. From her studies and experience she produced a series of books on
contemplative prayer. Miss Underhill
(Mrs. Hubert Stuart Moore) taught that the life of contemplative prayer is not
just for monks and nuns but can be the life of any Christian who is willing to
undertake it. She also taught that modern psychological theory, far from being
a threat to contemplation, can fruitfully be used to enhance it. In her later
years, she spent a great deal of time as a lecturer and retreat director. She
died on June 15, 1941.
Officiant | Lord, open our lips. |
People | And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. |
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as
it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia
Jubilate Psalm 100
Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; *
serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his presence with a song.
Know this: The Lord himself is God; *
he himself has made us, and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
go into his courts with praise; *
give thanks to him and call upon his Name.
For the Lord is good;
his mercy is everlasting; *
and his faithfulness endures from age to age.
Psalm 37:3–6, 32–33
1 Do not fret yourself because of
evildoers; *
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
2 For they shall soon wither like the grass, *
and like the green grass fade away.
3 Put your trust in the Lord and do good; *
dwell in the land and feed on its riches.
4 Take delight in the Lord, *
and he shall give you your heart's desire.
5 Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in him, *
and he will bring it to pass.
6 He will make your righteousness as clear as
the light *
and your just dealing as the noonday.
32 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, *
and their tongue speaks what is right.
33 The law of their God is in their heart, *
and their footsteps shall not falter.
At the end of the Psalms is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
John 4:19–24
The Samaritan woman at the well said to Jesus, “Sir, I see
that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say
that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her,
“Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither
on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship
what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is
now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who
worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.

People | And also with you. |
Officiant | Let us pray. |
Our Father, who art in heaven, O God, Origin, Sustainer, and End of all your creatures: Grant that your Church, taught by your servant Evelyn Underhill, guarded evermore by your power, and guided by your Spirit into the light of truth, may continually offer to you all glory and thanksgiving and attain with your saints to the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have promised by our Savior Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. AMEN. Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole |
Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
