Tis the season...  Yet another election cycle has begun and the stage is filled with a cast of eager candidates.  As expected in Alabama - more are Republican than Democrat.  Already the roads are cluttered with billboards and signs.  Every other television commercial seems devoted to extolling the virtues (or not) of one candidate or another.  I don't often listen to the radio but hear the same is true across the dial.  Then there are the posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Tis the season and it will be long.

InnerPolitics

I vote and I don't think I've missed voting in any election in recent memory.  I will tell you that I consider myself a liberally conservative moderate or maybe I'm a moderately liberal conservative.  I don't watch the 24-hour news channels and I don't listen to radio talk shows.  I still read the newspaper and get the rest of my news from the internet (so it must be true).

Who is Running?

I like to know who I am voting for in an election.  Some years ago I decided to actually learn something about the people who are running.  I try to do decent and objective research and this time it seems fruitful to share some of my sources.  Obviously, there may be some bias.  I have met several of the candidates for different offices and actually know one quite well.  Unfortunately, I don't get to vote for him.  I will share what I find and if we disagree then let us remember the words of Aristotle who said,

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

When I'm in Charge!

On more than one occasion, my poor wife has had to endure my political philosophizing.  When they put me in charge of the world...

1.  This statement will be required on all political advertisements and literature (Yes, I borrowed it from the lawyers):

No representation is made that the quality of political services to be performed is greater than the quality of political services performed by other politicians.

2.  No negative statements about your opponents or anyone else.  Give us a positive reason to elect you (what a novel idea!).

3.  No saying you are the more conservative or liberal candidate until the political parties can come up with a definition of those 2 terms that everyone accepts.

4.  Finally (aren't you glad), ALL political signs must be removed one week after the election.  I was driving through south Alabama last week and saw 3 signs for the same candidate for 3 different elections.  #nosignsleftbehind!

Disclaimer

Please don't read anything into what I write as an indication of what I am thinking beyond this moment - it will likely change.  NOTHING you read in any of these posts should be blamed on my wife or anyone else.  I come up with this mess all on my own.  And I would be absolutely negligent if I did not say...

Lieutenant Governor

This election seems like a good one to start with because I had to look up what the Lieutenant Governor does beyond becoming the Governor in the event of a midterm vacancy.  Ballotpedia gives a pretty good summary of the office at www.ballotpedia.org/Lieutenant_Governor_of_Alabama.

There are 3 Republican candidates and 1 Democrat.  I've listed them in alphabetical order and I'll let their websites and social media sites speak for the candidate.  I don't know and have never met any of these candidates.  I have also not heard any of the candidates speak as of yet.  I did not find any debates or public forums currently scheduled.

The candidates are:

Wil Ainsworth - Republican

Will Boyd - Democrat

Twinkle Cavanaugh - Republican

Rusty Glover - Republican
