Jesus and Broccoli?

Image
I have always given thanks that Episcopalians do not typically put the title of this week's sermon on a sign.  But if we did then - well you get the idea. So did I preach about Jesus and Broccoli?  Well sort of!  My sermon is further down the page.  The YouTube version will be on our website and right here in a day or so.   But - Jesus and Broccoli??  This was one part of my prayer and prep this week that was somewhat of an AHA moment.   Do I believe in Jesus as much as I believe in broccoli? I couldn't resist putting that in green - wretched man that I am?  The thing is, I think I need to eat better.  And that got me to thinking.  I don't know that I have ever doubted broccoli.  You tell me broccoli is healthy and I don't question you.  I have no idea how it is healthy or how it somehow benefits me.  I don't doubt broccoli. So why do I doubt the God of all creation including green leafy vegetables? ...

A Trio of Saint Luke's!

It all started because I could not hear the sermon...   No I wasn't preaching, Corey was.  Corey Jones, my colleague and good friend, was obviously making some good points and getting some laughs. But, at Saint Luke's if you are sitting behind the preacher, it just doesn't work.  I am deaf in one ear and Phyllis says I don't listen all that well out of the other, so all I was getting was bits and pieces.   Well anyway, on Monday I listened to Corey on YouTube.  After all, the man has an Emmy and so there was bound to be something worth "borrowing" for a future homily.  Saint Luke's online is easy to find and the link is below.  Corey's sermon is really good and it is probably the only time a 1965 Ford Shelby GT 350 has been used to illustrate the Gospel.  Why would you want to keep God's love in the garage?   So you can listen to Corey's Sermon by clicking here  HERE!  or going to   https://youtu.be/7...

The Bible this Week for the 6th Sunday of Easter

Love is a Good Thing! This week's propers are pretty much all about love, which is a good thing since its Mother's Day.  For the lucky faithful who actually check my blog, I am preaching this week and I plan to focus primarily on the Gospel.   As a preview to this week's sermon, I was visiting Founders Place on Tuesday and during devotional, it hit me out of the blue that when we love someone, we are doing what God does.  We don't do it as perfectly or as big as the Almighty, but still!  It's pretty humbling in my opinion! So, here is the Bible this Week for the 6th Sunday of Easter.   Blessings! David

If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the  Lord  said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the  Lord .’ Invite Jesse ...

The Bible this Week for the 3rd Sunday in Lent

Living Water This week, our scripture lessons talk about when we are thirsty!   The Israelites are thirsty in the Wilderness.  Jesus is thirsty at the well and a Samaritan woman learns about living water.  Rich is preaching this Sunday, and I am certain we will learn something new about God!   The Collect A lmighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen. Old Testament Exodus 17:1-7 F rom the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the  Lord  commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled...
