Get It in Lent

Image
Lent Friday Add-Ins for your Spiritual Life Well it's Lent again and folks everywhere are thinking about things to give up.  It's the usual Lenten discipline!  Of course we give up, so we have room in our lives to take on something spiritual.  I mean it hardly makes sense to just leave an unfilled hole in our lives.   So if you are looking for some resources this Lent, maybe I can help.  After all, no one ever said we have to reinvent the spiritual wheel!  If you have one you like, feel free to email me and you'll get the credit.  So here are this week's "Add-Ins" for your Lent. Let's start with Living Water , Rich's always interesting Sunday morning Bible study.  You can find it on our website under Media at www.Saint-Lukes.com or just click on the link for the latest installment.   Of course I'm going to blow my own horn and suggest The Bible this Week which you can always find here at InnerDriving.com or on our Saint Luke...

The Bible this Week for the Last Sunday after the Epiphany

A brief reflection on the Scripture lessons for next Sunday at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook, AL.   Collect O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 1 st Reading:  Exodus 24:12-18 T he  Lord  said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” ...

My Sermon for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany at Saint Luke's.  The sermon starts at 22:00 minutes in the YouTube video above. Epiphany 6A 1 Cor. 3:1-9 and Matthew 5:21-37 Saint Luke’s February 12, 2023 This morning’s Gospel is one of those - for a preacher – when you can’t help but scratch your head and ask – is there anything else to preach on???   It is long and full of Thou Shalt Not’s.   Thou Shalt not murder, thou shalt not be angry with other people, Thou Shalt not swear to anything – ABOUT anything.   THEN it sounds like Jesus is telling us - there are times when we should tear out our right eye or cut off our right hand. Tevye - that wise old peasant Jew in Fiddler on the Roof - says that an eye-for-an-eye and a tooth-for-a-tooth leaves only a world of blind and toothless people, and I think the same is likely true for right eyes and right hands.   How do you preach on that?   So, I turned in hope to 1 Corinthians.   It’s us...

The Bible this Week - Epiphany 6

The Bible this Week The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany The Collect O  God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen. The Epistle 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 B rothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human?...

The Bible this Week for the 5th Sunday after Epiphany

The Bible this Week  for the Fifth Sunday after The Epiphany This was my blog from several years ago.  Since Facebook has changed and I'm having trouble figuring out how to post The Bible this Week as a video, I'm trying something new.   Innerdriving.com was the idea of my daughter, Stefanie.  Many years ago, she and I were in the car together.  I was expressing my frustration with other drivers and Stefanie said, "Dad, you need to get in touch with your inner driving."  I loved it and did and bought the url.  Since then we have learned the importance of inner driving, inner family, inner work, and the list goes on and on. I will post each week the latest episode of The Bible this Week.  When I preach, I will also upload the sermon.  If you know me, then you know my email address and you can let me know if you agree or disagree with me. Blessings and see you in Church! David The Rev. David Hall S enior Associate Rector Saint Luke'...
